Why I never start from a template
Templates are a reasonable answer to a real problem. Most people do not have the time or the budget to design a website from nothing, so they buy a layout that already works and pour their content into it.
The trouble is that the layout was never about them. It was drawn to fit thousands of businesses at once, which means it commits to nothing. The type, the spacing, the rhythm, the way a page opens: all of it belongs to someone else's idea of a generic company.
A template can look clean. It rarely looks like you.
Building by hand is slower, and that is the point. Decisions get made on purpose. The measure of a line, the weight of a heading, the moment the page holds still. None of it is inherited.
I start from the business, not the layout. What it sells, who it talks to, how it should feel to arrive. The structure comes out of that, so the result reads as one thing instead of a good theme wearing a new logo.
